RIP James Gunn

Writer, critic, and historian of science fiction James Gunn has died.

He had a 71 year career. It was perhaps only exceeded by his friend Jack Williamson.

He’s one of this blog’s favorites, and I’ve reviewed several — but not enough — of his works.

  1. I enjoyed James Gunn’s work, too. I recently acquired a copy of Gunn’s The New Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and plan to post a review about it in a few weeks. I’ve been a fan of Gunn since I read STAR BRIDGE as a kid. Loved THIS FORTRESS WORLD, too. Gunn lived to be 97.

    1. I suspect you will find The New Encyclopedia of Science Fiction something of a disappointment. I think Gunn himself said he wished he could have taken his name off it. I’ve read all his novels and enjoyed almost all of them. There are a few short stories I haven’t tracked down yet though. Still some of his non-fiction I need to pick up.
